Under a worldwide rules-based framework shaped by Western liberal ideals, Australia's food system and agriculture industry have thrived. However, the economic frameworks, policy methods, and presumptions that have historically underpinned Australia's food security are no longer appropriate.

Rising geopolitical tensions, geo-economic shifts, climate change, declining water security, and quickening technical advancements are some of the long-term issues that Australia and the Indo-Pacific region are now facing. They are not attempting to replicate this preparedness elsewhere in a coordinated manner, particularly in their food system and agricultural sector, even while the government is taking steps to increase the Australian Defense Force's readiness for combat in the region.

According to the green paper, food is a key component of the stability and security of the Indo-Pacific region as well as Australia's national security. For too long, civil and defense circles have taken for granted the importance of food in preserving both national security and the prosperity of Australia and the surrounding area. Australia must now reevaluate its food security and take into account its implications on regional stability and Australian security due to its worsening strategic environment and significant reliance on fragile supply networks.

Instead of viewing its agricultural and food system as a disjointed supply chain, Australia needs to consider it as a linked ecosystem for food security. Likewise, food security has to be prioritized as a national security issue at the departmental and ministerial levels.

This can be accomplished by designating the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry as the principal agency in charge of the food system and food security readiness, having its secretary join the Secretaries Committee on National Security, and having its minister join the National Security Committee as a permanent member.
