Bengaluru Flood Crisis Sparks Outrage over Unchecked Real Estate Development
Rains poured heavily in Bengaluru, leading to disruption and lives lost and many residents believe unchecked growth and planning mistakes are the reasons.
On Tuesday, Bengaluru was hit by severe flooding, forcing roads to close and snarling traffic. There have been five rain-related deaths in Karnataka and heavy rains have caused major flooding on Hosur Road between Silk Board and Rupena Agrahara.
Many people online blamed real estate development for putting pressure on the city’s infrastructure. Many individuals’ online accused developers and politicians of harming natural water sources and drains to build more commercial sites.
One resident says that real estate developers have made lakes and stormwater drains disappear, with the help of politicians. Others also expressed similar opinions, pointing out that lack of attention by officials has helped the housing market, but not at the expense of safety and the layout of cities.
Critics said that local politicians prioritize real estate over proper city planning. Residents say that having no elected officials in the BBMP and poor coordination among departments add to the problems.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru after rainfall totals increased to 105 mm from Sunday night to Monday morning. A recent 90 mm of rain in Mangaluru points toward a larger impact across the region.
During these heavy rains, Karnataka residents are calling for more responsible maintenance and stronger policies for builders, as they want to avoid more disasters. The problem of politics affecting real estate is still a big concern for many, who believe it is causing the city great harm.
