Can FebriDx® Differentiate Bacterial and Viral Respiratory Infections?
FebriDx® is a rapid point-of-care test designed to help healthcare professionals identify whether a respiratory infection is more likely to be bacterial or viral. It measures two biomarkers, C-reactive protein (CRP) and Myxovirus Resistance Protein A (MxA), using a simple disposable test device.
A study was conducted in the emergency department of an academic hospital to evaluate how accurately FebriDx could identify bacterial and viral infections. The study included 244 patients with suspected infections between March 2019 and November 2020.
The results showed that FebriDx had 87% sensitivity for detecting bacterial infections and a 91% negative predictive value for ruling out bacterial infection. It also showed 94% specificity for identifying viral infection.
These findings suggest that FebriDx can be a useful tool for supporting clinical decisions when evaluating patients with suspected respiratory infections.
