Finding the Right Daycare in NW Calgary: A Parent's Guide for 2026
If you're searching for daycare in NW Calgary, you've probably already noticed two things. The fees are lower than they used to be, and the spots are harder to find. Both are true, and knowing how they fit together makes the search less stressful.

What does daycare cost in NW Calgary in 2026?
Since April 2025, eligible children who are kindergarten age or younger pay a flat fee of $326.25 a month for full-time care or $230 a month for part-time care at a licensed daycare or family day home that receives affordability funding. In practice:

Full-time means 100 or more registered hours a month.
Part-time means 50 to 99 hours a month.
Because the fee is flat, it's the same at every participating centre, so price is no longer how you choose between them.
The provincial government says this flat fee is covered by grants to providers for roughly 80% of fees, saving families an average of $11,000 per child per year.

Is $15 a day guaranteed to last? Alberta and Ottawa have agreed to a one-year extension, keeping fees at an average of $15 per day through March 2027. The extension is meant as a bridge while both governments work on a longer-term arrangement. It's worth watching for news, but nothing has changed for families today.
Are there extra costs? Possibly. Providers may charge supplemental fees for optional extras such as transportation, field trips and meals. Ask any centre for a written list of what's included and what isn't, so there are no surprises on your first invoice.
Before and after school care costs something different
This is where many parents get caught out. The flat fee covers children up to kindergarten age. Out-of-school care fees vary by provider and aren't eligible for the same affordability funding, though families with children in full-time kindergarten to Grade 6 may qualify for reduced fees through the Child Care Subsidy Program.
The subsidy is income-tested. One 2026 guide puts the cutoff for households earning under $90,000 a year, so check the Government of Alberta site for your current eligibility.

How early should you join a daycare waitlist?
Earlier than feels reasonable. Calgary has no single citywide waitlist and no standard wait time, and some centres are full and only taking names for future openings. A rough timeline, based on local guidance:
Infants: Start during pregnancy. Infant spaces have the longest queues because of smaller staff-to-child ratios.
Toddlers and preschoolers: Begin 6 to 9 months before you return to work.
The shortage has a structural cause. Finding suitable space is hard, and play-space requirements, cost and finding qualified staff all make it difficult to open new centres. So waitlists aren't going away quickly.

Ratios: what "licensed" means for your child
Licensed centres in Alberta must keep a minimum number of educators for the number of children in each age group. Current ratios at Alberta centres are:

12 to 18 months: 1 to 4
19 months to under 3 years: 1 to 6
3 to under 4 years: 1 to 8
4 years and older: 1 to 10
Out-of-school care (6+): 1 to 15
These match the ratios published by Alberta Childcare Licensing, but ratios are a minimum. When you tour, ask how many children are in the room that day and how many educators are with them. Also ask how long the lead educators have been at the centre, because staff continuity matters more to most children than any piece of equipment.
